This two-day workshop is designed to provide instruction to social and behavioral scientists interested in learning about functional genomics methods (e.g., gene expression profiling) in research on psychosocial determinants of health. Topics include general psychobiological concepts, research design and strategy, pragmatics of tissue sampling and sample processing, RNA profiling assays, low-level analysis of differential gene expression, and bioinformatic analyses of cellular and transcription factor mechanisms. The workshop includes interactive clinics in which attendees begin implementing these approaches in their own research programs. The larger conceptual focus is on environmental regulation of expression, with MIDUS RNA data as a primary example.
